Sugar Plum Fairy

One Christmas, someone in our family gave my brother and me a copy of Fantasia. Its still one of my favorite movies of all time. And I still try and watch it every Christmas. This kind of beauty is so rare in the modern world.

Merry Christmas

Coming Tomorrow...

So I'm back from Colorado! Shame on me, not one picture of my grandmother's vintage white tree decorated in homemade felt ornaments or one shot of the amazing food. Among the festive highlights, were not one, but TWO different baked brie, broccli coleslaw, and a absolutely decadent chocolate cake by my brothers pastry chef girlfriend. Needless to say, I'm going to be eating pretty light for the next few days.

On another note, here is the tiniest teeniest weeniest sneak peak at our pictures for the new website...

I can hardly wait--I just know they are going to be amazing. Once they download from the FOUR DVDs on which they are.

She's a Beauty

Deluxa's (non window display) Christmas tree.

All the vintage ornaments and even the tree skirt are for sale. $2-$8.50.

We're off to Colorado tonight, so most likely no blogging from the road, but hopefully we'll come back with some vintage gems from the outer-Denver area!

Report on 3rd Ward's Handmade Holiday

The Handmade Holiday event was spectacular! A huge congrats goes out to Nikki of 3rd Ward for all her hard work in pulling off an amazing collection of crafters and for bringing such a huge turn out!

The day started at noon with Deluxa's vintage dress-up photo booth slammed from the start! My photographer Victor Jeffrieys II and I worked our tushes off styling and cajoling people into dress up. Some were (much!) easier than others, but in all the booth was hugely successful! Ladies in Jackie-O style, kids in fedora's and ray bans, guys in the girls clothes, adults reading salacious books in librarian glasses--everyone seemed to get into it, and Victor took some amazing shots, really capturing the festive atmosphere. Check out more of his pics from the day here. Sigmund Droid played some fun live music (they got a lot of sound out of a bass and drumkit!) Even Channel 12 showed up to get in on the action! The super tasty bloody mary's were a big hit too!

Also, I'd never been to 3rd Ward before, but what an amazing space for artists and creative types. Again, like yesterday's Brooklyn Kitchen post, 3rd Ward is an avant garde artists' co-op that invests in creating a more positive community, putting tools into people's hands that otherwise would be inaccesible. Member benefits include access to a photo studio, wood shop, metal shop, digital media lab, audio studio, classes, office space, and a community of like-minded individuals. Then they also have classes like how to make edible stationery, screen printing, and all kinds of sculpture--really a culture of empowerment. Even if you aren't a member, you can still check out their gallery, rent space on a per-project basis, attend events like movie screenings, or their recurring "Drink and Draw".

Anyhow back to the Handmade Holiday, again I was super impressed with Brooklyn Kitchen, and got to know my local table mates, Artikal, who designs devastatingly beautiful hats for all occasions (I've still got my heart set on one brown cloche, maybe Santa will read this?), and luckily I was also near our dear friends Agapantha, as well as (woo-hoo!) the LED hula hoops by ProdMod which were so cute to see little kids play with.

Christmas Ornaments in Store

Here's just a few of our ornaments right now, all priced between $2-$7. Like so many things, these vintage ornaments seem to have so much more charm and preciousness than their modern counterparts.

The blog kick off!

Hooray! The Deluxa blog has finally been born! I've been blogging a bit on the MySpace page but I am super excited to be sharing Deluxa on blogger and just in general all over the blogosphere. I'm going to repost the MS entries here, just so it's a bit more unilaterally tidy but first a bit about Deluxa to introduce ourselves to the blog reading interneters:

Opened in October of 2008, Deluxa vintage took over the store formerlly known as Go Fish! Brooklyn, selling vintage for him, her, and baby, mid-century modern furniture, homewares, bric-a-brac, wall hangings, fabrics and notions, vintage jewerly, Agapantha jewelry, Dog and Pony Show's line of greeting cards, and Penelope Rouge soy wax candles.

We're located on a beautiful quiet street in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, sharing the block with Eton, who's dumplings and shave ice have a cult following, and the best neighborhood coffee shop Naidre's. Also as we are on Sackett, we are on one of the few streets that has a brige going over the BQE, so be sure to stop by on your way to Red Hook if you're passing through (as many of our customers are!).

We have a fantastic website in the works (to be unveiled in the next month or two), but for now I'd like to share our holiday window display and invite people to come check out are great holiday stuff. We've got dishware, aprons, fabric, and TONS of AMAZING vintage ornaments. So beautiful. Anyhow, here is our holiday window display:

I'm really and truely looking forward to sharing more of Deluxa and to building a community of vintage enthusiasts and lifestyle lovers. These may be tough times, but that doesn't mean we can't still love and cherish lovely things and take joy in the small delights of good design.

Looking forward,
Kristen
