I'm thinking of maybe using Spaceage Round on an upcoming poster for the next Luxa show--just announced--with a great line up (and a great poster image in the works). Full post coming soon.

Also, never got to recap after our show with Ulrich Schnauss and Mark Van Hoen: an amazing, wild, inspiring, and blizzard filled night. Thanks to all who made it out (and then had to make it back!), and I'm sorry if we didn't get to chat long. It felt like I talked to everyone for five minutes each!

Been spending a lot of time lately making video visuals for the upcoming Luxa show on the 25th at the Bell House with Mark Van Hoen and Ulrich Schnauss. Both these guys not only produce incredibly moving music, but with their live shows, they produce equally incredible visuals. Here is a peek at some stills from our first stab at editing moving images to music so hopefully we won't so starkly pale in comparison...

Here is a link to a Luxa song, Red Rover, to check out, and here is a video of "On Your Love" that's in the vein of where our show visuals are going.

Luxa Opening for Mark Van Hoen and Ulrich Schnauss

My band, Luxa, is opening for Mark Van Hoen and Ulrich Schnauss at the Bell House on February 25th. While I am of course excited to play the show, I completely cannot wait to get to see Mark Van Hoen and Ulrich Schnauss on the same bill. It is such a complete honor to be on the bill with these two greats.

Here's a favorite MVH song:

Here's a favorite Ulrich Schnauss song:

Here's the press release for the show too, with all the juicy details:

"Ulrich Schnauss is best known for his hand in the resurgence of 90’s shoegaze, influenced particularly by My Bloody Valentine, Ride, and Slowdive. With these influences, Schnauss has taken the shoegaze-defining wash of sound from a different approach, relying heavily on electronics rather than guitars to produce an analogous effect. On top of his three successful albums Far Away Trains Passing By, A Strangely Isolated Place, and EP Goodbye, Schnauss has remixed countless bands from Depeche Mode to Asobi Seksu to Mojave 3 to A Sunny Day in Glasgow. Schnauss has announced plans to release an album of selected remixes entitled Missing Deadlines, available on March 22th on Rocket Girl Records. In collaboration with Loveless Music Group, Schnauss has remixed, performed, and toured with New York shoegaze bands Soundpool, Elika, Dead Leaf Echo, Project Skyward, and Mahogany as well as Luxa.

While the name Mark Van Hoen may not immediately garner as much recognition as Schnauss, his reach and influence is arguably as authoritative. As an original member of Seefeel, the BBC noted, “In a brief listen one can hear the influence on Boards of Canada’s damaged melodies and dense claustrophobia, more so than even the usual suspects like Aphex Twin.” After tours with Massive Attack, Orbital, and opening for Slowdive, Van Hoen formed Scala with three members of Seefeel, releasing three albums. Van Hoen has also released four albums as Locust, including the electronic masterpieces Morning Light and Playing with Time, succeeding at infusing electronic music with moving emotional swells. Among his many production credits, Van Hoen has produced multiple titles for Mojave 3 and Sing Sing (Emma Anderson of Lush), as well as Seven Principles of Leave No Trace by Edison Woods.

Van Hoen will be releasing a new album, Where Is the Truth, in late February, his first in over five years. The Bell House performance will also be Van Hoen’s first in several years to feature backing musicians, including members of Edison Woods and Anthony and The Johnsons, accompanying his heavily visual and electronic performance."

Deluxa's One Year Anniversary Celebration

It is of course, still a bit away, but I wanted to get the word out now for Deluxa's first anniversary party. Champagne cocktails, and maybe cupcakes too, open to everyone from 12-7, then a few hours with some close friends. Details below:

Brooklyn Flea Appearance Today by Deluxa Cancelled

Sorry to report, Deluxa will not be debuting at the Brooklyn Flea today due to rain (how does the forecast go from scattered storms at 1pm and 4pm to friggin' rain all day from the time I went to sleep at 2:00 to the time I got up at 6:30?).

I'm pretty sure the weather has it out for us this summer, and it's doing a damn fine job.

Lawrence Chandler at MMNY

So sadly our music festival had to be moved in doors, but a huge thanks to the fabulous Bell House for hosting us on such short notice. Everyone still got to play, and in all had a good time regardless.

Our friend Jason Banker was one of the kind attendees to make the leap to the Bell House, and took this absolutely fantastic video of Lawrence Chandler. Love the video. Love the music. Can't wait to see more projects from both of these guys.

MMNY Featured Artist: Her Vanished Grace

We've got the excellent Her Vanished Grace on our Make Music New York bill for 11:45am-ish, and a really great way to kick off the more shoegaze acts on the bill.

From their Myspace:

Her Vanished Grace bring you their brand of imaginative guitar rock. Nance and Chas Nieland, along with Maria Theodosiadou and Billy Loose continue to explore the terrain of sweet melodies and biting guitars. The powerful rhythms of Billy and Maria anchor the soaring textures while Nance and Chas spin tales of mystery and regret.
HVG 's new recording BLUE (2009) is dark urgent pop singed with white noise. They've crafted a sweetly menlacholic tableau of vivid memories with lush vocals and simmering tension. With Nance and Charlie’s guitar textures veering from candy colored swirl to vintage ‘60s bite, this is the blend of old and new that the band has been striving for.

Be sure to come and check them out on Sunday. Very cool female and male vocals--adding great dynamics to an already great band. They've also got a great looking show at the Delancy on July 18th.

Her Vanished Grace MySpace--I'd recommend Remember, Disappear, and Alone.

MMNY Featured Artist: Ghost in the Water

Driving all the way out from the midwest, we are thrilled to be having Ghost in the Water play Make Music New York on June 21st.

From their MySpace:

nathan doesn't believe in ghosts. mandy sort of does. sometimes they argue about it. neither one is ever swayed in their stance. they both really like to make music though. they've made indie-pop with a band called fitzgerald for a while now. but they wanted to make electronic music too. they really like electronic pop songs. so they started ghost in the water. they have an album that they finally finished, it's called "tooth".

Here is the cover of their digital single, "Clean Sings and Folded Laundry", which is one of my favorite songs of theirs. Beautiful melody, strings sections, and imagery make it really special.

I'd post the song here to check out, but our file hosting service seems to be down...but for sure check out what they've got on their MySpace.

Also, we don't have "Tooth" in stock just yet, but post MMNY, I plan of having a few copies, put out by our fantastic friends, Hidden Shoal Recordings.

MMNY Featured Artist: Lawrence Chandler

Lawrence Chandler
formerly of Bowery Electric is headlining our block party bill for Make Music New York on June 21st. From his MySpace:

Lawrence Chandler is an American composer of experimental music living in Brooklyn, New York. He studied composition at The Juilliard School and privately with La Monte Young. Chandler has worked as a music assistant for Philip Glass and is a founder of seminal post-rock group Bowery Electric.

Lawrence Chandler is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization.

Lately his MySpace page has featured lengthy tonal pieces that I find suprizingly addictive to listen to. As he hasn't released anything officially solo, and his MySpace has only had up one (non-downloadable) track at a time, his set for MMNY should be exciting to say the least (if you're iterested, there are rumors of a string quartet).

He will be on last, sometime around 7:30/8pm, and weather permitting, there should be a gorgeous sunset behind him...sounds like a perfect ending to a music festival to me.

Come join us at Sackett between Henry and Hicks on Sunday June 21st for our block party for Make Music New York.

MMNY Featured Artist: Telltale

From their review on The Free Times:

Brooklyn’s Telltale showcases an intriguing mix of experimental no-wave, reverb-soaked post-punk, and dark shoegaze. Featuring Eric Gilstrap, Laurie Ruroden, Stephan Cherkashin, and Lauren Andino, the quartet's ear-splitting washes of guitar feedback, deadpan chants and ominous droning wastelands doesn't so much blanket you as it does envelop you, overpowering you with Sonic Youth caterwauls and JAMC-esque walls of sound. The music churns in a slow burn, awash in effects, but there’s an aggression lurking just beneath the surface that maintains an uneasy atmosphere. There’s also a healthy dose of reverb to help wash down all the gauzy noise... This will destroy you... and you will love every second of it.

I don't know if I can say it much better than that. I'm really looking forward to hearing them outside though--something about their hard driving sound I think will be especially well received. They are on around 1:30.

Stephan from Telltale will also be DJing later in the afternoon. He DJs regularly around the city and is one of the masterminds behind the sadly now defunct club Vanishing Point (but they still book shows!). He's sure to be spinning some great tunes in addition to creating some of the most gnarly guitar feed back you've ever heard in Telltale.

MMNY Featured Aritst Rebecca Pronsky

Time Out calls Rebecca Pronsky, "passionate, literate, and wry" and Deluxa is so excited to be having her play our block party for Make Music New York on June 21st.

You can check out one of my favorites "Birds" in this post, and check out even more songs on her website and her myspace. Her album "Departures and Arrivals" is available in store at Deluxa, and her new limited edition EP (which I'm dying to get my hands on a copy) is out now, "The Best Game In Town".

Hey Neighbors!

I'm not sure if anyone living on Sackett between Henry and Hicks reads this blog, but if you do, come on by and let me know if you'd like to sign my form for the 2009 Make Music New York Festival! There is quite a bit of bureaucratic process to go through (signatures, money orders, permits, SASEs, SAT scores, etc.) , but I'm crossing my fingers that we are going to have one kick ass Sunday afternoon on the first day of summer, June 21st. We're working on a band line up with Self Storage Recordings and Loveless Music Group that should be announced in the coming weeks!

Another Project

Luxa is my music project I work on with my love Andy Durutti and dear friend Andrew Conrad. We're playing a show tomorrow at Union Hall with Elika and Arbol. It's Andy D.'s birthday also, so should be a good time--come check it out!

We also are working on an upcoming EP and have more shows planned for April.
